Orsigna (806 m): this town dates back to the 17th century, when the
bishop Scipione de'Ricci chose the woodland terrace called "Pian del
Sartino" to build a church that would become the centre of the various
surrounding villages. It is still not clear where the name has its origins;
it appears that it comes either from the name (Orsini) of important landowners
or from names that derived the presence of mountain bears (orsi).
The town today represents the starting point of many routes across the valley
of Orsigna and and routes that connect the Tuscan side of the mountain to
that of Bologna. The whole area is a rare example of the Apennine landscape,
where man respected the environmental characteristics and maintained unaltered
the morphologic conformation of the valley.
Shelter of Porta Franca: located at 1580 metres altitude in the high
valley of Orsigna, the shelter i courtesy of CAI of Pistoia. It has many
beds, living rooms, kitchen and bathrooms. Water and shelter are always
available outside the shelters.
